- REGISTERING STATIONER AND THE 7.0 PLUS UTILITIES
- ================================================
- Stationer is not free. Sites using this software in business MUST
- register it. Contact the author for site licensing information. If it is for
- personal use only, please send a few dollars. Or you can consider the
- following.
-
- 7.0 PLUS Utilities is a package of all (more than 25) System 7.0 utilities
- I have written. You can get the disk with all of them NOW (not wait until
- I decide to upload the next program) by sending $29.95 to me. This will
- register you for all the software, will get you a disk of the software, and
- an update to the PLUS Utilities when it rolls around. It’s a pretty good
- deal. You should register your software, anyway, so why not do it
- like this? And it’s a lot cheaper this way.
-
- See the documentation which should accompany this file for
- more information on the 7.0 PLUS Utilities. A registration form should
- also accompany this file. Please use it to register the software.
-
- USING STATIONER
- ================
- • If you use Stationer, please please please send me a note. My addresses
- (post and e-mail) are given below in “About the Author”. Also, read the
- information in the above section on registration.
-
- What Does Stationer Do?
- ----------------------
- • Stationer, a drag-and-drop utility (Drop Box), allows you to quickly and
- easily toggle the stationery bit on selected files, without the trouble
- of going through the Get Info window. It can be used on entire groups
- and directories of files, filtering out those on which the bit should not
- be modified. Stationery pads are used as templates in System 7.0.
-
- • See “What are Stationery Pads?” for more information on using stationery
- pads with System 7.0.
-
- Using Stationer
- --------------
- • Drag sets of files, folders, or disks into the application, “Drop Box-
- style”. Stationer will scan folders and disks provided, and will
- modify all files no matter what their depth. Drop Boxes require Apple
- Events, and thus System 7.0 or higher.
-
- • You can also double-click on the application and select files to modify
- through a standard open file dialog. Double-clicking also gives you access to
- the Preferences and About dialogs.
-
- • When in Manual mode (using the Open... menu item), the file open dialog
- will appear with several extra buttons. The Stationery check box is checked
- if the currently selected file is stationery. You can check or uncheck this
- button as desired. The other two check boxes determine what files to
- display. Remember that folders are always displayed (regardless of their
- visibility). The last two extra buttons, All stationery and All standard,
- allow you to make all files in the current directory either stationery or
- standard. Stationer does not go any deeper than the current directory when
- in Manual mode.
-
- • If you drop an alias directly into Stationer (not inside a directory), the Finder
- will resolve it and Stationer will think that you’re dropping in the target
- (parent) file, folder, or disk.
-
- • Double-clicking on files in Manual mode is the same as toggling the
- Stationery check box. Otherwise (double-clicking on folders or disks),
- it performs the standard function.
-
- • If you attempt to modify an alias in Drop Box mode, the owner file will be
- modified accordingly (not the alias).
-
- • Hold down the shift key to suppress the alert that checks to be sure you
- want to modify selected items. This is only necessary if you have turned
- the Show alert preference on.
-
- • Hold down the command key while the program is launching to override
- the Stationery/Standard setting and toggle the bit on all selected files.
- Stationery files will become standard files, no matter what your Preference,
- and all standard files will become stationery.
-
- • Alerts are very annoying, especially in Drop Boxes. So there aren’t any. As
- a rule of thumb: if it doesn't work, there must have been an error.
-
- • To cancel processing, just type a command-period. Files already processed
- will remain modified.
-
- Preferences
- -----------
- • The first time you try to modify a file using the program, the preferences
- dialog will come up, just to make sure the correct parameters have been
- set up. You can modify these if you wish. If you don’t want to see that
- window again, just say OK. You will have to explicitly ask for for the
- Preferences window the next time you wish to change anything. The
- preferences apply ONLY to Drop Box mode. They are not consulted when in
- Manual mode.
-
- • The preferences are fairly self-explanatory. You can choose to show an
- alert before modifying anything. The Relaunch Finder button lets you select
- whether the Finder should be quit and relaunched remotely to update icons
- which may not otherwise be fixed. This is also where you tell Stationer
- whether files “dropped” in should be made stationery or standard.
-
- • To show the Preferences dialog on-the-fly in Drop Box mode, hold down the
- option key while the program is launching.
-
- WHAT ARE STATIONERY PADS?
- ===========================
- Stationery pads are special documents used as templates in System 7.0.
- Opening a stationery pad does not open the document itself; instead, a copy of
- the stationery pad is made, either by the Finder or by an application which
- properly supports stationery. If the application supports stationery, a new
- document is usually made with the contents of the stationery pad. Otherwise,
- the Finder will copy the file, and force the application to open the copy.
-
- • One way to turn a document into stationery is to use Get Info in the Finder
- and click on the Stationery pad check box in the information window.
-
- USING DROP BOXES
- =================
- Drop Boxes are applications (drag-and-drop utilities) which can take advantage
- of System 7.0’s Apple Events. To use them, just drag a file over the application
- icon just as you would drag a file over a folder to move it into that directory.
- The Drop Box is then opened and processing is done. The program then quits.
- You can also throw in whole directories and disks. You don’t have to throw in
- just one, either. Select a whole bunch of files, directories, or disks, or any
- combination of the three, and dump them in. The Drop Box will scan for
- files of the required type and modify them accordingly. All files in all
- directories within those dropped in will be modified. Any aliases dropped
- directly into a Drop Box (not inside a directory) are resolved by the Finder
- and thus their target (parent) is modified.
